MISSION STATEMENT

Long and Short of It Movement Theatre (LSMT) uses mixed media — dance, theater, film, and visual arts — to actively redefine space while exploring the possibilities of escaping the conventional limitations of each form. Fragments

“Fragments” is a short film, that presents isolated sections of the human body.  The feet, spine, scapula, shoulder, leg, arm all speak their own language before and after they relate back to the body as a whole.  We take our bodies for granted.   We have endless ways to communicate through the body.  ”Fragments” uncovers and displays the layers we hold within our skin.  “Fragments” is a short film that introduces conversations between our bodies. Our bodies reiterate and describe along with verbal dialogue.  We use our knees, ankles, clavicle etc. to relay our message to everything beyond ourselves.  ”Fragments” uses the camera to lead the eye away from the common place of expressivity and focuses on the body below the neck.  This gives the audience a guided spectatorship rather than a completely open view.  Long and Short of It Movement Theater puts dance behind the lens in order to redefine the body and offer a fresh outlook on the strength of body language.

Join Long and Short of It Movement Theatre (LSMT) for our debut performance as a company in “To Do”- a variety show of dance, film, and a singe girl’s ramblings about dating. Alumni of Muhlenberg College and co-founders of LSMT, Olivia Wingerath (a former dance major) and Becky Nitka (a former theatre major) have joined together to create a show about all the mayhem of being a 20-something, while exploring the social awkwardness of developing new relationships outside of the college “bubble.” This performance also marks the premiere of LSMT’s short dance on camera piece “Fragments,” conceived by Ms. Wingerath.

“To Do” is presented by The Tank.

Separating From Wood to Dust

Separating from Wood to Dust is a modern dance piece that uses repetitive and staccato movement to create a haunting tone. The trio moves as one, creating wide, open shapes, as well as individually of each other. This piece works with the idea of separation and longing for one another within the intricacies of any relationship. Using movement to convey memory and recollection, two dancers move to tell the story of the third dancer’s past. She moves in unison with them in order to share with the audience and eventually allows the audience to look back with her to previous relationships throughout her life.  The piece includes gestural movement vocabulary and pedestrian movement to translate anxiety and desperation to communicative body language. The trio contort their bodies in order to tell the inevitable story that everyone has lived, simply and unconventionally. With music composed by Radiohead, Separating from Wood to Dust is a six minute piece that uses the complexities of relationships to carve through space and allow the audience to self reflect.
